Rob Pruitt’s 50th Birthday Bash

ROB PRUITT’S 50TH BIRTHDAY BASH

The Brant Foundation is pleased to present Rob Pruitt’s 50th Birthday Bash, a solo exhibition of works by Rob Pruitt, on view in Greenwich, CT.

“I’m having a show at The Brant Foundation Art Study Center – and it’s my 50th birthday! I feel a certain warmth at the thought of these two events coinciding this May. The invitation to show my work in the beautiful converted barn on The Brant Foundation property is so appealing to me as I’ve admired Peter’s collecting since my days as a wee art handler at the Sonnabend Gallery where I remember Peter coming into look at the latest Koonses. Since then, his collection has grown to include the work of friends whom I admire greatly, and I’ve been happy and proud to be able to say that some of my own works have entered that company… But I digress. What I really want to say is that I’m excited by the opportunity to present my work in a space that is not another anonymous white cube. One might look through the Study Center’s windows and see the family’s horses in the surrounding fields. Just across the street sits a house where Brant kids do homework and holidays are celebrated. It’s not a typical institution but a thoughtful succession of rooms with a palpable connection to a real family. These rooms have already begun to develop their own legacy through the shows that have come before me, and they reflect the connoisseurship of a family I’ve grown quite fond of.” – Rob Pruitt

“So that’s an Urs Fischer monumental outdoor sculpture, and then my piece is to the left; it’s the googly eyes in the trees. And it’s sort of installed to be in conversation with Urs’s monumental sculpture. I can remember after the invitation came from Peter, and getting a tour of the foundation, and thinking about what I might do, my mind reeling with millions of possible ideas. One of the first things that popped into my head was, how am I going to compete with this enormous Urs Fischer sculpture? And on a budget. So I thought that I was pretty clever to turn a tree into a sculpture — even bigger then Urs’s — by putting the googly eyes, for under $700. This is a sign of my name right in front of the foundations exhibition building. And what I was thinking is, basically, a show like this is a destination; it’s not like seeing an exhibition on the other side of town, or in Brooklyn, someplace where you just hop on the subway. So I was considering that. That anyone who comes will have made an effort. Like going to Euro Disney, that would be a big effort. So that inspired me to make my name in flowers as the first thing that you see when you enter the show.”

It is a re-visitation of a piece that I made 12 years ago, called '101 Art Ideas You Can Do Yourself,' which we simple recipes for art-making. I think it was my first show at Gavin's, and I made it as a gift to my parents, who had paid for my art school education. My father died a few years ago, but he was a really warm, wonderful, kind man. He didn't finish high school and therefore didn't go to college, and loved me a lot, and was supportive of everything I did as an adult, like with my art-making, but never quite understood what the hell it was that I did do. So I made this list of 101 art ideas, like an explanation to him. It's a deconstruction, in my mind, of what conceptual art is in a way that I thought he could clearly understand it. So this version, coming 12 years later, I handed the original list over to my studio assistants, to update it. So it's all 101 ideas, but translated or filtered though their brains. So they totally ruined it. My original list is a lot better.

Brant Family Flea Market

“So after you leave the reception area, the Brant Family Flea Market starts, it’s the first big room of the exhibition space, but this is a little side room off of that big room. And it was all of the matriarch stuff. And that is Stephanie Seymour, who is such a delight, and it was so much fun for me to work with her, and rummage through her closets with her. And I don’t know. I guess what I’m leading toward, is it wasn’t just an off-handed gesture, to get the Brants to sell all of their stuff; the museum kind of exists in the family’s backyard, and so, in my mind, I wanted to figure out a way to weave the family into the show. I’ve been making art for 25 years, but I haven’t been making art about the Brants for 25 years. But I thought that if I think about what I do, I’ll be able to stick to what it is that I do, but bring them into the show in a very natural, organic way. And this is what I came up with.”
